Fishing for a new career

When our candidates don’t get the job they were really hoping for, I really feel for them. Dude, we’ve all been there! But, for real, it’s a good thing because it just means there’s bigger fish out there for them to reel in. Besides, they wouldn’t be feeling frustrated about their job search if they didn’t want something bigger and better for their life.

So, if you’re feeling the same way, we suggest you take a step back and figure out what you could be doing to take good care of your big bad goals. How do you do that? Well, we like to think about it like a good day out fishing:

Take care of your equipment.

When you’re fishing, you’ve got to have a reel and line that’s in tip-top shape if you want to pull in the big catch. It’s the same thing for your body and mind. Maybe you need an afternoon to take a break from the search. Watch Netflix, hit the gym, or go fishing to clear your head. And take the time to be prepared for your dream job with any new training that will make you a more desirable candidate.

Reel it in carefully.

When there’s a hook on your line, you don’t want to jump the gun. If you get too excited about a bite and act too quickly, you may lose the slippery swimmer you had seconds earlier. It doesn’t pay to be hasty with your career either. Employers can feel your desperation! Give yourself the space you need to find the right opportunity, and reel it in at the right time.

Enjoy the anticipation

Some fishermen get bored when they’re not getting bites on the line. Others know that being patient, and actually enjoying the lulls, can lead to huge benefits. Waiting for the thrill of the catch can be the best part of the day.

Be one with the water.

When you’re highly aware of every ripple and trickle, it’s no longer observation, you’re feeling your way to the fish. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. It’s giving you important clues, so dig deep to determine which areas of your job search are causing this feeling. Then make small adjustments until you start getting bites for the position you’ve been waiting for.

Seek a fishing guide.

Sometimes you just need a little guidance and help when you’re new to a fishing spot. We here at Madden are here to help you whether you’re an experienced fishermen or brand new to the lake. Contact your recruiting specialist and let them know how they can guide you through the search.
