How To Choose The Best Candidate

There was probably a time when you got down to the final two or three candidates, and you had a hard time choosing between them. Each of them had admirable – but very different – qualities that they brought to the table, and you just couldn’t figure out how to weigh your options. Here are some guidelines that, as we’ve seen, will make a huge difference in the satisfaction of your decision, long after you’ve made the hire.

PRIORITIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF NEEDED SKILLS.

Some skills are really hard to find and hire for. You may have a candidate that has a higher number of the skills and qualifications that you listed on your job posting, but still aren’t the best fit because of the importance of one missing skill that is most important for this specific job. It makes it much easier for you if you’re clear on exactly which ones are crucial, or most needed for each position you hire for.

DETERMINE IF THEY’RE A GOOD FIT FOR YOUR CULTURE.

If they’re excited about your company’s mission and/or project, they’re more likely to apply their experience and skills at a higher level. Looking at their attitude and values to see if they fit into your organization can sometimes be just as important, or more, than their skills.

LOOK AT THEIR ABILITY TO GROW AND GAIN NEW SKILLS.

Technology is changing fast, including 3D printing, cloud computing, data access, virtual reality, and much more! So, depending upon the position, you’ll likely want to find people who you can see are consistently improving their skills with continuing education, or have shown that they can adapt to changes.
